So, I've had strep throat for the past three days, and watching this episode was torture because I couldn't properly scream at the TV. For both good and bad reasons.
We start off with a flashback of young Jane and Xiomara, with Xo wanting to go out to dinner with Abuela. Abuela has locked herself in her room and refuses to come out. Xo then tells someone over the phone she is ready to go to the mall after all. Meanwhile, baby Jane is coloring on the walls, very cutely I might add.
Then we're back to the present. Jane is daydreaming about Michael, and Michael is daydreaming about Jane. Jane confirms with Xo it's Michael, then feels bad she has to tell Rafael. Meanwhile, Rafael already knows and talks with Luisa about what he's going to do. Luisa suggests lying and saying the cancer is back. Thank goodness he didn't agree to that because more lying isn't what we need right now. Jane promises herself she won't let Michael and Rafael's feud get in the way of Mateo because she wants to be with Michael forever but feels bad for Rafael. Even the narrator points out she's "feeling all the feels."
Xo, Abuela, and Jane all get ready for a meeting with immigration lawyers so that Xo can become Abuela's sponsor. At the same time, Petra is about to throw up (she's got real bad morning sickness) when Milos reminds her about their impending marriage. He has made a lot of wedding preparations, including booking Britney Spears as the entertainment.
When Jane sees Britney in the lobby, she fantasizes about dancing with her. She tries to take a picture, then sends it to Xo. When Xo tells Rogelio about this, he freaks out. Apparently they were best friends, and then she betrayed him. So Rogelio is going to the hotel to confront her.
We cut to Rafael talking with Petra about Britney being in the hotel for the wedding, and Petra confesses the wedding is hers. Jane walks in and hears about her being engaged to Milos. Both Rafael and Jane think something is up. But when Jane is about to tell him about choosing Michael, he changes the subject, not wanting to hear about it now.
Back to Abuela and the immigration stuff, they are meeting with an immigration lawyer. Abuela tries to impress him with her English. But as the meeting continues, we discover Xo has a felony in her past. Back in the 90's, she was dating a guy named Zed. He shoplifted a ring for her, and when they were caught, she took the blame. This could hurt Abuela's chances of getting her green card. But, if they find Zed and get him to admit he stole the ring, the felony would go away.
Jane has to go back to the hotel to pick up Mateo, then she sees Michael. The urge to kiss him is stopped by Luisa, who says Rafael is upstairs with Mateo. On the way up Jane runs into Petra, who is still very sick. Jane asks her why she's marrying Milos, and Petra tries to convince her it's because of their love. We cut to a flashback of Petra playing the violin on the streets. Milos walks up and says he's been watching her. He has a new violin for her. If that was supposed to make me like Milos, it's not working.
Jane goes to talk with Rafael and they decide he should go talk with Petra's mom, Magda, because maybe she will be able to stop the marriage. On Jane's way downstairs, she finds Rogelio waiting to confront Britney. When Britney does arrive, Rogelio says something happened at the 2009 Pop Latin music awards, an incident with the teleprompter. Britney leaves in a fury.
Xo looks up a video of Britney and Rogelio at the awards. Apparently, the words on the teleprompter were tampered with. Britney saves him by taking the envelope with the awards and announcing it herself. Rogelio believes Britney was the one who messed with the teleprompter. Xo and Jane, however, don't really care about his feud because they've found Zed's address, which they discover is a good drug spot. Zed is apparently a dealer, and when he refuses to admit he stole the ring, Jane takes things over.
Zed offers Jane a marijuana chocolate bar, which she reluctantly accepts, then tries to persuade Zed by saying if he admits to the crime it wouldn't matter because the statute of limitations ran out. He still refuses because he has a "I know nothing" policy when it comes to the cops. Back at the Villanueva house, Jane is still trying to get the felony off Xo's record. She finds out Michael knows the attorney of state and then asks if he can arrange a meeting for them. He does, but Abuela is angry with Xo about the ring deal and leaves.
Rafael then calls about the Magda deal and reveals Magda will only talk to Jane. Jane agrees, and while at the prison, Magda reveals she wants Jane to put in a few good words for her to the parole officers. Jane refuses, admitting the real reason she is there is to warn her about what Petra is going to do. Magda reveals Milos runs internet scandals. Jane tells Petra to hold this information over him, then agrees. Back in Rafael's pent house Jane is about to tell Rafael about Michael, but he confronts her first. In the end he asks Jane to leave, and she does. My shipper heart was crying.
But then we're back to Petra, who is about to use the internet scandals to blackmail Milos, when he shows up with a violin, apparently the same kind he originally gave her. Back at the house with Jane, she is about to go to the meeting with the attorney of state, when she finds Xo and Abuela have found the marijuana chocolate bar and eaten half of it. They, of course, can't go the meeting now that they're high.
Rafael texts Jane telling her the wedding is still on. Jane goes to talk to Petra, and Petra reveals she's marrying Milos because of the money. Jane says she want to help Petra in anyway she can, then arranges a traditional marriage crown over Petra's head. Honestly, as much as I don't like Petra, this was pretty cute, and I kind of hope Petra gains some character growth so she and Jane can really be friends.
But then Jane finds a flyer with Rogelio's face on it, a stalking order about him from Britney. Jane goes to Britney to confront her about this, and Britney tells her Rogelio betrayed her while shopping in Mexico City. Apparently he tipped off the paparazzi she was there because he wanted to gain more fame for himself. He feels awful now, and the two reconcile.
Then we cut to Michael, and this is where things get real bad. Basically his cop boss has found out about him letting Nadine go that first time, thanks to some help from a confidant who wants to remain anonymous. Michael believes it was Rafael. Enraged, he goes to the hotel to confront him. At the same time, Petra is getting married. As Petra says her vows, Michael beats up Rafael. He knocks him into a vase that shatters, then cuts Mateo.
Later, Mateo is all bandaged up at Rafael's penthouse. Rafael confronts Jane about Michael, and Jane does wonder if he was the one to turn him in. This, of course, upsets Rafael. Jane returns to the house where Xo and Abuela have recovered from their high, and reveal they confronted Zed by blackmailing him, and now he's going to confess to the police. Abuela apologizes to Xo because none of that would have happened if she had just done to dinner with Xo that night. She was too consumed in her grief because it was the anniversary of her husband's death. She says a real mother should have put her daughter first.
When Xo and Abuela sees Mateo's bandage, they have questions. Jane tells them what happened and how she thinks Rafael really did turn Michael in. But, Michael sneaks into his cop boss's office and finds a video of the guy who confessed about Nadine, and it is not Rafael.
Michael goes to tell Jane this, and Jane feels awful that she accused Rafael. She replays the sequence of events in her head and how Mateo got hurt. She decides Michael has too much anger towards Rafael for their relationship to really work. So she puts Mateo first and lets Michael go. She cries in her room with Xo and Abuela, but when Mateo smiles up at them, her mood instantly shifts. It's Mateo's first real smile, and it makes everything better.
With Petra and Milos now married, he reveals another one of his motives for really marrying her. The wedding provided a cover up for him to bring in boxes full of illegal hand grenades.
But then we're back to Michael who is at the police office apologizing to his cop boss. His cop boss reveals he knew Michael sneaked in his office, because Susanna was watching. He is then fired. As much as I am Team Rafael, I didn't want Michael and Jane to end like this. I didn't want Michael to lose everything, I didn't want him to be captured by Nadine at gun point either, which he eventually is.
Too many feels. Come back next week for another recap full of those feels!
