Another week, another
Jane the Virgin recap. Things are getting crazy, aren't they? Let's get into the recap!
We start with a flashback of young Jane with the family, struggling over only having one bathroom. When Xo spits toothpaste on Jane's hair, and Jane yells at her that if Xo had a real job they'd maybe have more than one bathroom. Back in the present, Jane talks with Xo about her Professor Chavez dream, but then Xo gets a text about being needed for a singing thing and can't babysit Mateo anymore that evening. Then Rogelio walks in, ready to prep for Xo's big birthday party, and says that he can babysit.
We jump to Rafael talking to Petra over the phone about hotel stuff, then Jane walks in ready to drop off Mateo. Then she's off on her way to meet Chavez, and the entire time can't stop fantasizing about him. Soon we're with Michael and the drug stuff. Luisa drops a sexy phone call to Susanna, but that's interrupted when we discover a picture of Elena with her stepdaughter, and the daughter looks like she could have had plastic surgery...and thus, she is Rose.
Then we're back to Jane, who is reading her writing at a conference and accidentally says the name Jonathan (Professor Chavez) in place of the lover's name. Afterwards, Jane freaks out about the flub, but Chavez eventually comes over and winks at her. Xo and Jane later dissect this wink when they're baby-proofing Rogelio's house for his babysitting session. While cleaning, Xo finds the ring Glamma gave to him, and Jane confesses she heard Glamma telling Rogelio to propose. Xo gets too excited and puts on the ring, but then Rogelio walks in. After some fumbling, Jane tries to hide it, but eventually Rogelio finds out she has it. He reveals he was going to give it to Jane as a family heirloom.
Then we go back to Rafael, who talks with Petra about some hotel problems. Apparently, a big wedding is being canceled on them because of the reports about the Solano name. Rafael thinks he can convince the bride to move back to the hotel by wooing her, and then we flashback to Rafael and Petra the night they met. He hits on her. She encourages it even though she's engaged. Blah-blah-blah.
We go back to Luisa, who is being told by Michael that Rose is Elena's stepdaughter, and she admits everything is a bit messed up. But then she identifies another man in the picture as the driver who took her and Rose around a lot. We go to Jane, she tries to drop hints to Chavez, but he isn't really getting anything. Then he asks if Jane could maybe introduce his mom to his dad because she's a big fan, Jane agrees, though a bit dishearteningly.
We go to Rafael and Petra, they go to an art show to discuss with the bride (who has her artwork being displayed) about getting the wedding back at the hotel. It is then revealed that the problem isn't the Solano name, it's Petra. Izzie (the bride) reveals that when she was a barista, Petra yelled at her for spilling coffee, and she got fired. She was actually inspiration for an art piece called "The Trophy Wife."
Jane eventually goes to drop Mateo off at Rogelio's but is frustrated when Rogelio isn't as attentive as he should be because he's been tweeting. She calls him, but finds out the tweets were pre-arranged. But, as Rogelio was distracted with the call, Mateo swallowed the diamond Rogelio was showing him, the one to be put in a Xo's engagement ring (he's planning to propose after all). After a trip to the doctor, Jane is clearly upset with Rogelio. At the same time, Xo is being fired from her job at the club because she's cancelled too many times. Xo tries to convince them not to fire her, but they're all:
Later, Jane tells Xo about what happened (replacing diamond for button) and feels bad that she yelled at Rogelio. But she still has to meet with him on set with Chavez and his mom. Xo tells her to look out for any signs of attraction from Chavez. On set, Jane tries to apologize to Rogelio, but he's still a bit upset. When Chavez eventually comes over, Jane misreads the signs and thinks he likes her. Meanwhile, Petra tries to placate Izzie by inviting an influential art critic to her show, but the critic gave bad reviews, and so now Izzie is pissed. Rafael scolds Petra, but she reveals she wanted to take care of the situation herself so she wouldn't be seen as a trophy wife. Rafael says he never saw her that way, then they flashback to them on the beach talking about saving money on fish fillet. Blargh.
We go back to Luisa, who got in touch with the driver, and she asks if he knows where Rose is. All the while, she's linked with the police through a mic, but as Susanna overhears Luisa talking about Rose, she feels saddened. Luisa then tells the driver that if he does know where Rose is, he should tell her to send donuts. That way, Luisa will know to wait. We then go back to Jane and Chavez, who misreads the signs again. So on the way to her car she accidentally kisses his shoulder.
Jane later tells Xo about the incident and decides to talk to Chavez about it. He makes his feelings clear that he doesn't see her that way, and Jane thinks they should try to move forward. Back to Petra and Rafael (side note: I hate how I keep writing Petra and Rafael, life sucks), they have agreed to give Izzie a free wedding in order to make amends. Izzie has one condition; that they display "The Trophy Wife" inside the hotel.
Jane then goes back to writing and finds she can't connect as well because of the incident. Jane tells of her woes in the bathroom with Xo, and Xo recalls the tooth paste fiasco from young Jane's past right as Diego calls to give her another shot. Unfortunately, it's during the birthday party Rogelio is planning for her. She tells Rogelio this, and because he was wanting to propose, Rogelio's plans are ruined.
As Xo performs at the club, Susanna visits Luisa but reveals she can't be with her because Luisa still has feelings for Rose. Also, Rafael talks with Petra, and he kisses her. Me:
But then Petra stops because she knows he still has feelings for Jane. You know, after all Petra's done, I'll give her a few points for this because she's finally reached a maturity point of deciding what's good for her and when to stop. Back at the club, Jane talks with Rogelio, and gives him the diamond she found in Mateo's poop. Rogelio reveals he's afraid of being a bad father, but Jane thinks he will do fine. Encouraged, Rogelio goes to Xo and proposes. I'm tearing up, Xo is tearing up, but of course, things can't be that easy. Xo reveals she really wants to focus on her career and doesn't want any more kids, which makes Rogelio reconsider.
Xo tells Jane about this later, and Jane lets her know she's there for
support. To get her mind off of it, Xo talks to Jane about Chavez. Jane
is obviously embarrassed, but the entire situation has Jane thinking
about her vow of chastity and how she may want to break it.
I'm going to go on a mini rant here. One of the major things I love about the show is Jane's character and her
values. Yes, it's been talked about how being a virgin doesn't define Jane, but she's waited so long for a reason, and I don't think it's just because of a promise she made to Abuela. Waiting until marriage is about being sure about the person, it's about realizing there is value in sex, and it shouldn't just be done with anyone. I could maybe get behind having it before marriage in Jane's case, but only if it's with the
one, and I'm not sure Chavez is that.
Jane isn't even sure Chavez is that. Also, I think Abuela's way of explaining is a bit flawed because it isn't about not ruining yourself, and I think Jane was viewing it that way her whole life. There are more reasons to not having sex than just not wanting to get pregnant, being right with God, keeping chastity, etc. Honestly, I could write a whole essay about this, but I digress.
Anyway, the next day Jane goes to tell Chavez she can't continue working with him, but then he asks her out for dinner. Of course, she agrees.
Then we jump to the mountains again, and Elena's there with Rose.
What did you guys think of this week's episode?
