Spoilers! Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. contains PG-13 level content.
Last time we spoke, we barely recovered Coulson, Fitz, and Robbie through a magical gateway courtesy of artificial life form, Aida. I mean, that sentence sums up how wild this show has gotten. As the midseason finale, this episode had high stakes. It was also a conclusion to the Ghost Rider story line, and Robbie Reyes definitely went out with a bang. (I miss him already.) What exactly went down, and what did I think? Let's find out.
My Favorite Moments
★ The beginning with the confused reporters and the news-style footage really reminded me of the very, very first AOS episodes. We've come a long way.
★The special effects with YoYo were extremely cool, particularly the one with the explosion.
★ Daisy is back on board! Yay! I can't even contain the excitement and relief that she's back.
★ Seeing Mace in the field was cool. I'm still not his biggest fan, but I like him! His role in this episode, plus the fact that he came clean about Nadeer, made me see that he's worthy at the helm of S.H.I.E.L.D.
★ The exchange where May and Coulson told Mace that Aida was a robot... best scene ever.
Mace: But that's... Okay. I mean, forget about the fact that I was mildly attracted to her. That totally goes against the Sokovia Accords. Doesn't anyone remember Ultron?
He has a fair point.--(source)
★ My Mack/YoYo ship has sailed.
(For now. Nobody is allowed to touch them.)--(source)
★ I finally, finally get my Life Model Decoy story lines! Though now I'm not so sure that's a good thing. Why in the heck did I ever think making Aida would be a good idea? (I bet that last one is what Dr. Radcliffe will eventually ask himself late at night.)
My Least Favorite Moments
★ I'm trying to be satisfied with the Ghost Rider conclusion. I really am. But where did he go? Is he gone for good? Will Robbie come back? Gabriel Luna was such a solid addition to the show, and I'm extremely sad to see him go.
★ I really should have seen it coming.

Overall
This wasn't a terrible midseason finale. It could have been worse, but it also could have been better. (Maybe I'm just salty about Robbie leaving; that could be it.) I think the surprise of May was underwhelming, but that's because I guessed it through promo art and a half-awake viewing of the ending. I'm very concerned for her, though, and peeved that when she and Coulson finally opened that bottle, IT WASN'T ACTUALLY HER.
I think part of my problem about this episode is that I've had more riveting midseason finales with AOS that left me scrambling to know answers, to know more. (Like that time Skye turned into Quake, for example.) I don't quite have that urgent feeling with this winter finale yet, unfortunately, though I'm sure that will change the more I think about May's fate. One thing's for sure: I'm going to miss this show while it's gone and I can't wait until it comes back.
What did you think of the winter finale? How will you fill your time until AOS returns to TV?
January 10th is soon-ish... right?
